Celebrating Dr. Blackwell’s 200th Birthday: The Sisters Blackwell

Historian and Author Janice P. Nimura’s critically-acclaimed book on the Blackwell sisters (published in January) has received extensive praise from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Nature, among many other publications, and she was recently interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air. Join her for a discussion of The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine. The session will be facilitated by Professor of Women’s Studies Betty Bayer, the past chair of the National Women’s Hall of Fame. A question and answer session will follow.

Nimura Janice P. Nimura received a Public Scholar Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities in support of her work on The Doctors Blackwell. Her previous book, Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back, was a New York Times Notable book in 2015. Her essays and book reviews have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Salon, and LitHub, among other publications. Betty Bayer, Professor of Women's Studies (@Hobart and William Smith Colleges) Professor Betty Bayer is an expert at the intersection of women’s history, psychology, science, religion and spirituality. She has explored the abolitionist and women’s rights movements, and their common history in central New York. Recognized for her outstanding work as an educator and leader, Bayer received the Colleges’ Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in 2004 and the Community Service Award in 2009. She has served as the chair of the Women’s Studies Program since 2001 and directed what is now the Fisher Center for the Study of Gender and Justice from 2002 to 2009. A former senior fellow at the Martin Marty Center for the Study of Religion at the University of Chicago, Bayer earned her Ph.D., M.A. and B.A. in psychology from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.
